Mit ihrem Titel würdigte die Reihe „Kracauer Lectures in Film and Media Theory“ den gebürtigen Frankfurter Philosophen, Soziologen, Schriftsteller und Film- und Medientheoretiker Siegfried Kracauer (1889-1966), einen der einflussreichsten Denker des 20. Jahrhunderts im Feld der Film- und Medientheorie. Zugleich verwies der Reihentitel auf die Rolle Frankfurts und seiner Universität als Gründungsorte der kritischen Reflexion des Films und der technischen Medien im 20. Jahrhundert.
Die Reihe setzte sich zum Ziel, avancierte aktuelle Positionen der Film- und Medientheorie und der Medienphilosophie sowie der Medienreflexion in der Kunst- und Kulturwissenschaft und der philosophischen Ästhetik zur Darstellung zu bringen und damit einen Beitrag zur Erweiterung und Entwicklung des Feldes der Film- und Medienwissenschaft zu leisten, der am schnellsten wachsenden geisteswissenschaftlichen Disziplin in Deutschland.

Debashree Mukherjee (Columbia University): Symptoms and Submergence: A Media History of Shipwrecks
„In this talk I attempt an intimate and immersive story of the meanings of indentured labor, plantation capitalism and mediated life through a focus on shipwrecks. Some of the most enduring mythographies of tropical islands derive from an 18th century French romance novel, Bernardin de Saint-Pierre’s Paul et Virginie (1787). It describes the idyllic childhood of two white European children who grow up in Mauritius and tragically perish in a shipwreck. Drawing on this story and its spin-offs, I consider a cultural and mediatic history of shipwrecks and the material things that spill out from them."

Charles Acland (Concordia University): The Longest Revolution, or Notes on 'Authoritarian Populism' for Media Critique
„Stuart Hall’s concept of “authoritarian populism” has proven to be a powerful, prescient, and lasting contribution to cultural critique. And yet, beyond providing a general description of seemingly contradictory political movements, what can it reveal of the specificities of our current historical moment and the role media plays in populist formations? This presentation argues that an intensified relationship between political culture and the popular in the United States and elsewhere has posed a challenge to the cultural left."
